So we bought a house last year from elan, before we moved in the problems started; we requested to view the house at various build stages, despite repeated requests we were not given the opportunity to view it. I do not encourage this behaviour but it culminated in us walking on to the site uninvited and fortunately one of trades let us in (I work in construction so was fully ppe'ed). We experienced repeated delays in the completion date, meaning we lost a buyer for our house; the excuse given was that Elan wanted it to be perfect for us. We were not alone in this experience, others were delayed just days before moving.
Then we started the snagging process; the finish is incredibly poor, plasterwork is obviously uneven (2m check in daylight) and the painting looks like it was done on a Friday afternoon. Brick ties were visible, bricks are clipped, poor pointing, weep holes and soldiers uneven. The concrete floor has plaster on it leaving lumps under the carpet (carpets installed by Elan subbie). The rear garden needs rotavating and stone picking, we have a wheelie full of rubble and glass which has risen to the surface. There are so many more defects that I could catalogue, but I'm slowly losing the will, I believe this is deliberate!
We paid for a snagging survey to be completed to ensure all defects were captured as we'd lost all confidence in the builder. 9 months on we are no closer to having even the simplest defects rectified, so we are raising a dispute with NHBC. I will update any progress.
Should you buy an Elan Home? If you have the choice of another builder, consider it very strongly, however you buy for the location not necessarily the house (or builder), but be prepared for no existent customer service (phones never answered) and for a lengthy defect period. You've been warned!
