i can't beleive i've stumbled across this post.

it could have been written by me! hopefully the op is still around!

can you tell me how you got access to the wall tie in order to cut it? did you need to cut plasterboard and plywood away?

you dont happen to have a bett house do you?

    cheers,

If you have timber frame home then you can access wall ties from the inside in the way you suggest.

However, it would be better to cut out a brick wouldnt it.
You may need to use an endoscope so you can see into the cavity before doing anything.

Bett Homes do seem to be bad!

    Hi, thanks for the reply.

Yes, I agree that it would be easier to remove a brick, however my gable end is finished in harling.

I hadn't considered an endoscope, thats a good idea!

    Default Wall Noise

    Hi Sparky,
Just noticed you had asked about the noise in wall cavity. The house is not a Brett house but it is a new build. It took us a while to find exactly where the noise was coming from as it tended to reverberate through the wall to different areas making it difficult to pinpoint. A lot of ear to wall when the creaking started to try and eliminate. Have to say we basically worked out roughly where the main area was and went right through plaster, the main membrane and into the cavity wall. We were very lucky that the tie was almost where we made the hole through and we were able to cut it with relative ease. When we went through the membrane, we only cut it 3/4 way in order to make sure it was well sealed when replacing everything back. If we hadn't found the noise the next step was a scope of some kind which we understood to be a bit expensive. If your home is a new Brett home this is something they should deal with.

Just keep persevering and I'm sure you can get it sorted. Please post when you get it all sorted and let me know.

    Best of luck.
