Default Waterlogged Garden - Please help!

Hi,
I have recently moved into a new property and the garden is so waterlogged that it is impossible to do anything at the moment.

The property next door is higher than ours with a level garden where as ours is a graduated slope from the top right hand corner down to the level of the house. We have the standard patio slabs running across the back of the house and it is here that we have the main problem.

The water builds up along the patio edge where it just sits. If you dig down here then it is about 6 inches until you reach a solid base (the amount to dig down varies on different points in the garden). I have tried digging holes and channels in the view to correct the drainage myself but the water doesn't go anywhere, there is no where for it to drain)

I appreciate that all builders do these days is dump a load of top soil out there, but, is there anything we can do from a 'rights' point of view to make the builder rectify the drainage issue. I have seen references to NHBC 9.2 and water not within 3 m but I cannot find this info anywhere. Is there anyway I can obtain a copy of the NHBC standards?

Thanks in advance

Julie

i have tried this approach with the builder and they would not entertain me as the claimed the exeptionally wet weather was to blame. NHBC aren't worth the stamp on the envelope, if it's not to do with bricks and mortar they aren't interested

hi, we had/have very similar situation where next door's garden is 3 feet higher and sloped directly into our garden causing issues with flooding.
A retianing wall was put in but only after months of fighting for it along with field drains. The ground is heavy clay and water cannot penetrate tot he field drains rendering them virtually useless.
As part of a bigger issue with the builder (Strathclyde Homes) we are again pursuing this matter through NHBC as Strathclyde Homes keep putting the problem down to excessive rainfall.
I lodged the complaint with NHBC today so i'll keep you posted on any news

Why not try digging a 'french drain'.Dig a deep trench around the perimeter, at least lm deep. Fill with small stones and let gravity do its work.
Obviously, you shouldnt have been put in this position by the builder in the 1st place. But if all else fails, this could be a solution.

Best regards
