Default How many nail pops ?

We've been in a new build now for 8 months and i've filled 28 nail pops already, they were the most visible ones - Is this a normal amount or excessive ?

Also had to fill the gaps between the stairway wood and the plaster - stringing I think it's called. In places these gaps were upto 1cm in size, the builder just says thats shrinkage but there must be an acceptable level and an excessive ?

Shrinkage cracks and nail pops are more common traditional brick and block properties when compared to timber frame. This is due to the increased amount of moisture and the effects of drying out. Some builders will deal with nail pops as snags, and there is certainly no harm in asking, especially if they are all in the same area.

1cm is excessive and should be dealt with as a snag.

For anybody reading this who has just moved in, there should be no shrinkage cracks visible when you move in. Don't be fobbed off.

you get nail pops ..( they are actually screws by the way..)

they only use 9mm plaster board sheets on the ceilings and the screws pull through the board as they tighten them up..

all good builders use 12.5mm board, you dont have the problem them..

also i am to assume your ceiling is not skimmed

This is a breach of NHBC Standards. The NHBC rely on BS5492 and this says if correct materails are used nail popping or blowing will not occur.

nail pops will still occour if the ceiling is skimmed and if the board is the standard 12.5mm. If a proper screw gun is used it pushes the screw in the last mm as opposed to screw it so they shouldnt happen, thankfully I havent had any however we did have 2 screws (pointed end) sticking throguh the wall from a joiner fitting skirting (dont ask me I have no idea how he did it either)

Not happy to see the above. We have several of these around our home, and thought they were pretty much inevitable. A few of the worst have been dealt with.

Also, we had, and still have, shrinkage cracks, although they're above and around doors, skirting etc.

Now it's the summer we've got more and more of these screw pops showing about the place. Driving me nuts to be honest, but we have bigger issues anyway. Grrr.

Still having serious issues with our George Wimpey "eco house", largest issue not being weather proof/water ingress. Next proposed step by the builders, replace all doors and windows.
