Have you told the neighbours? I bet it is the same for a lot of the houses.

A cauntionary tale from my experience with Persimmon and their electrical contractors revealed a problem which could become a major issue for those of you who wish to install Broadband into your homes.
I work for an international telecoms company, in engineering and on checking the cabling behind the telephone sockets in my new Persimmon home, I was horrified to discover that multi-core, multi-strand cabling has been used throughout the build. This is identified by the the fact that the cable wires are identified as red, blue, yellow, green, black, white - this is commonlty used for alarm cabling and should NOT be used for telecoms, especially broadband.
The correct cable should be white/blue, white/orange and white/green wires.
The BT sockets have a connector on the back where a special 'punch down tool' must be used. With multistrand conductors, it is impossible to achieve a satifactory connection, especially when used for High Speed ISDN connectivity - if you have tried to install this and BT tell you the signal is poor and cannot therefore be installed, this is the first thing to check!
The cabling for BT should conform to BTNR188, which the use of muti-core, multi strand cabling does not!
I had my whole house rewired at Persimmons cost, to rectify this situation.
Any questions, please send me PM or respond here.

Yes....it seems that the problem is duplicated along the street! However, Persimmon seem uninterested in resolving issues unless each household raises the problem themselves! No wonder they are the country's biggest earners in the housebuilding game!![]()
Yes, they have no obligation to let you know about issues that they have full knowledge of. It is corporate dishonesty - I would be so tempted to run off a few flyers. Did they manage to rewire your telephone sytem without creating additional snags?

Tony, the only way they could rewire was to run cabling externally, which was very funny watching them do this (I am an ex-telephony system installer and the contractors were asking ME to identify what 'pairs' they should be using to connect to the BT distribution point....I left them to work it out..only three lines but it took them 4-hours!).
The cabling was run vertically in black conduit and sunken into a course around the base of the house, which was filled with 1/2" down gravel. The job looks neat and unsurprisingly, when connected, I now have broadband working correctly.
Why couldn't they have wired it right in the first place, using the correct cable...it surely doesn't take a genius to read the drawing specs (which incidentally I managed to photograph all of the plans in the showhome when the sales assistant poppoed out to make a brew!....they come in very useful now and then!) :P
They would have made a right mess if they had tried to put it through internally
That's great advice for all - get a copy of the plans. My house was missing a tumble dryer vent, which the developer claimed wasn't on the spec, but I was sure I saw one on the plans that got waved in front of my nose for a few nano seconds. Luckily, one of the kitchen fitters left a copy of the kitchen plans in a drawer, which clearly showed the vent. Surprise surprise.
