    Default Telephone Sockets

My new build home as a Telephone Socket in each of the 4 bedrooms and 1 in the living room and the main BT socket is in the hall.
The main BT socket in the hall works but none of the others do.
I have had a resolution service from the NHBC and informed them of this problem, but they have informed me that this is beyond their scope and they cannot ask the builder to rectify this problem. I have been in contact with British Telecom and they have informed me that they will require a fee of ?150 to correct the problem. :x

Is the NHBC correct? and if so is there anyway i can get the builder to correct this problem, without having to fork out this money?

Only BT is supposed to touch the master socket, but you can do it yourself. All the wires from the other sockets will terminate here. The only problem is if you do it incorrectly you can get fined  (not 100% about that) Do a quick google search and I am sure you can find out how to link them up?

The First telephone point is called the `Master` this is the one that belongs to BT and the only one that they will correct/repair free of charge. All the others in a property are called slaves and just daisy chain from the master, however all will be connected exectly the same.Save youself ?150 and have a quick look that a cable hasen't fallen out cause the master will show you where it belongs.

    mucka,

The internal sockets will have been completed way before the BT man put his box on the wall the daisy chain from all the other sockets wired by the electrician should go back to the approx location of the bt box, if you find the cable is not connceted go the B&Q and have a look at the extesion boxes they sell - there is a color coded drawing on the back of extension sockets, follow that and yes you can do it yourself, if I hear a big bang I will know what's happened.

In closing if you find the wiring is not connected, ring the builder, it's his problem, the Bt man would not connect it for you.

If you do it yourself, you will require a little plastic push in tool, availabe from - yes you got it B&Q, you might want to ask that old man on the electrical section at B&Q he will usually have the answers for you.

For the record, Bt usually use either 2 or 3 pai cables into the property. The wiring is a s follows - First Line is usually always White/Blue, Blue/White pair, the second line, White/Green, Green/White. With White/Orange, Orange/White being reserved as a spare pair or fora third line.
The first point of entry into the building MUST be connected to a MASTER socket, for EACH line. Failure to do so will not provide RINGING to the line and could blow the circuit at the local exchange.
All other sockets off the line must be SECONDARY units wnd terminated on the back usin the same pair as the MASTER line, ie. White/Blue, Blue/White, and so on. The line potential is +48V DC so you will not blow anything up in your house!
Hope this is of use to you?
