Default Floating Floor Creaking

Hi

This is my first post on the forum. We moved into a Persimmon home in Sept 08 and are the second owners of the property.

The stairs in the house and in two bedrooms do creak (there is no creaking on the landing or the third bedroom) and I wrote to Persimmon (with other issues) and the response that I received said that the creaking is due to shrinkage! I thought that the creaking would have occurred due to two pieces of wood rubbing together due to expanding as they have not been given enough space to expand.

Am I thinking along the right lines or is it because the wood is too small and has shrunk?

Thank you

Rich

It is caused by movement when you stand on them. You can try screwing down the boards in question or lubricating with talc - this is a bit of a bodge used by site managers, but it works. You are probably outside the snagging period and not covered by the warranty.

Thank you for the reply Tony. We are still inside the warranty period so I shall keep writing letters to Persimmon and then escalate to the NHBC.

It is not every stair or floorboard that creaks, it is only certain ones that do.
