They're Going to Do It, But They Won't Say When!!
Further to our other posts, we have now had another visit from a new Persimmon Inspections manager, during which there was much progress and a distinct improvement in both engagement and credibility after the previous individual – a refreshing change after the last 18 months of pursuing Persimmon.
There are some considerable works to be done – groundworks, floor tiling replacement, garage floor replacement, squeaking floor fixing, etc – and this is all set to be done from 7 Jan 08, and it will take up to 2 weeks. This is brilliant news, and bar a few (ongoing) snags will clear our 18 month old Newbuild snagging list, but there’s an underlying issue that Persimmon don’t seem to understand – they seem to be focussed just on the work, and not the overall situation.
Situation - My husband has just had a major shoulder and back operation, and is now signed off work for 10 weeks to recuperate. His being at home has allowed us to offer Persimmon pretty much full access for the chosen 2 weeks, but only on the condition that we have an agreed programme or schedule of works in place. It has been promised but has not yet appeared – though the contractors have been instructed as they are ringing us up to get in before the agreed date!
All we have at the moment is a single letter (that we had to press for) stating “Work will commence on Monday 7th Jan 2008. I estimate that the works will take approximately one or two weeks
We need to know exactly what works are being done (details – where, when and what) and what days they will be happening over as we will need to have things moved beforehand (white goods, garage contents, etc) as this preparation will not be done on the day if workers arrive unexpectedly – I work 40 miles away and my husband can’t do things like that on demand at the present time. In addition to this, we will also need to fit in with the upcoming medical and physiotherapy appointments my husband will have.
On the works side for one example of conflicts, we have contractors coming at the front of the house to:
A. Lower large area of block paving
B. Front door canopy - remove pillars and rework brickwork, etc.
C. Front Eaves - replace mesh screen.
This has men working in one spot at three levels - impossible, but they've all been given a start date of 7th Jan -if the block paving man gets in first, the others will need hover boots!?!
Overall, for lack of Persimmon’s response (and we have told them about this) it is all becoming a BIG worry.
We will also be losing the use of the kitchen for 4 or 5 days whilst the floor is lifted and retiled, which will cause a big disruption, especially so for the convalescent who can’t exactly walk to the shops for his lunch at the moment! I wonder how that works out for the inconvenience factor - loss of our kitchen for a week after we paid a big sum for the ‘Finishing Touches’ floor to be in place before we moved in, to avoid such disruption.
