Has any one out there had any experience of purchasing a new home from this
builder and have you had many problems with your property.

Hi Bigted,

How have you found buying a Harron home? Would you recommend them? Or is that a stupid question?

Tony

Default Harron Homes

Bought a Millbeck home from Harron Homes on the Barnsley development. The home is fantastic value for money, however the after care is a joke. Due to the price (very competitive), the builders use cheap materials and do not pay attention to detail.
One year on and I am still trying them to do basic 6 month snagging tasks.

By all means, buy a Harron Home as they are good value, BUT, go through the house with a fine toothpick (especially the windows - check for scratches) before signing anything.

Hi Tony,

I am sorry that I have taken so long to reply to your last post, this is mainly due to 'falling ill' after purchasing our new Harron Home. I am now feeling more able to face putting our experience with Harron Homes and the NHBC into words. I will try and draft it out before I attempt to put it on the forum.

PS. do you allow swear words and death threats on the forum.

Hi Bigted,

Nice to hear from you again. It is absolutely disgusting that your new 'dream home' has made you. I look forward to reading your story.

Cheers,

Tony

Yes you are right Harron Homes are value for money, but this is reflected in the quality of workmanship finish and the fitting used. As like most Builders once they have your money they blame the most of the defects on the house settling and this is normal and not covered.
They will only fix the minimum on your snagging list.
If you can try and check the house before you give them the money and make them fix problems before you move in.
Hope this puts people off buying Harron Homes.

I after parting with £265K for one their houses i have had to spend another £10k trying sort out the back garden as they just left an hill an a garden. This is on top of problems getting some of the snagging done in the end I gave up trying do get them to do any of the snagging as the repair was even worse.

IF YOU ARE THINKING OF BUYING A HARRON HOME -BEWARE MINE LOOKS LIKE IT WAS BUILT BY THE TELLY TUBBYS .TOO MANY THINGS TO LIST BUT I WOULD IF POSSIBLE GET MY MONEY BACK AND GO BACK TO MY OLD HOUSE.THE BUILD QUALITY IS UNBELIEVABLE.AND NOW THE EXTERIOR WALLS HAVE CRACKED IN A BIG WAY (THERMAL MOVEMENT I AM TOLD) WHAT A LOAD OF ****** WHAT DID THEY DO--- RAN AN ANGLE GRINDER DOWN THE CRACKS AND THEN FILLED IT WITH SOME SORT OIF PINKY SILICONE (MY BRICKWORK ISNT PINK)NOW TWO SIDES OF THE EXTERIOR WALLS ARE AS BAD AS THE INSIDE .
WHICH EVER HOUSE YOU BUY DO YOUR SNAGGING LIST VERY CAREFULLY -TAKE YOUR TIME -TEST EVERYTHING-AND DONT LET THEM TALK YOU OUT OF ANYTHING YOU ARENT HAPPY WITH -MAKE THEM PUT IT ON THE LIST -OR WALK AWAY A GOOD BUILDER WILL SORT PROBLEMS OUT.
FINALLY---IF YOU CAN BUY ON A SMALL DEVELOPMENT BUY A GOOD REPUTABLE BUILDER GET GUARUNTEES IN WRITING AS ALL THE SMALLER DEVELOPMENTS IN MY AREA ARE A WORLD APART FROM MINE QUALITY WISE.---GOOD LUCK.

Thermal Movement - That old chestnut. I asked an NHBC Claims Inspector (who has now defected to a certain house builder - funnily enough shortly after the Resolution Report she carried out on my property - think about it!!!!) what the difference was between thermal movement and shrinkage, she didn't seem to know, neither does any other house builder I have talked to. I contacted the NHBC Technical Helpdesk (what a joke) regarding movement joints and while the person on the Helpdesk did know what they were they didn't have a clue as to how and where they are applied.
Thermal movement has been a consideration in structural design for some time now, believe it or not. This is why there are funny little numbers called coefficients of thermal expansion that are used to calculate how much movement will occur. This is also why there are equally funny things called movement joints. It is not rocket science.
If a defect occurs because of thermal movement then the design of the element is inadequate or the construction is sub-standard. None of which is the fault of the homeowner.
It is all just house builder’s lies.

NEVER EVER EVER BUY A HARRON HOME. i BOUGHT A FLAT IN MANCHESTER (NEW BUILD) 7 MONTHS AGO. THE PLACE IS A JOKE. AS WELL AS THE SHODDY WORKMANSHIP YOU CAN ACTUALLY HEAR PEOPLE GOTO THE TOILET,MAKE A CUPPA TEA,HAVE SEX AND USE THE PHONE.EVEN THE FLAT NEXT DOOR YOU CAN HEAR THE DOG WIMPER. THAT BRINGS ME TO THE NEIGHBOURS. BECAUSE THE PLACE IS 'BUDGET' PEOPLE BUY THEM TO LET (I PRESUME) AND THEY FILL THE PLACE WITH THE MOST UNSAVOURY PEOPLE. I HAVE A PROSTITIUTE DOWN STAIRS (GEN believe me i know) A GANGSTERS MOLL OPPOSIT AND THE REST LIVE LIKE STUDENTS. THE 'LADY' DOWN STAIRS BANGS DRUM AND BASE FOR 20 HOURS A DAY. THERE IS NO SOUNDPROOFING AT ALL EVER EVER. THE RECEPTION DOOR IS HANGING OFF AND WONT LOCK. MY FRONT DOOR LOCK IS ON ITS LAST LEGS. THE WALLS ARE MADE OF PLASTER BOARD.
DO YOUR SELF A FAVOUR.....BUY A REAL HOME
ANGRY ME.
